Emergency Disaster Services Volunteers are key to The Salvation Army’s Disaster Services Programs. Our trained Army of Volunteers helps us to serve meals from canteens, assist in donation management warehouses, lend an ear to disaster survivors, and perform many more tasks at a moment’s notice.

Volunteers are called on to serve both locally and nationally in times of need to support disaster operations. In addition, the EDS Volunteer Team participates in local drills that support community preparedness.

Typical volunteer deployments for local emergencies and disasters range from a few hours to a couple of days, while volunteers who are deployed outside of the local area asked to serve for up to 14 days (including travel).

 

How To Become an EDs Volunteer

Volunteering for disaster services requires a special commitment to serving those most in need at a moment’s notice. Volunteers are encouraged to talk with family and their employers prior to making a commitment to serve.

All Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) Volunteers are specially trained to understand the basics of a disaster operation, the Incident Command System, how to prepare for service, and food safety handling. CPR and basic first aid training is also highly encouraged.

The first step in becoming a trained EDS Volunteer is to register on The Salvation Army’s National Emergency Disaster Services Website, and to contact your local Volunteer Coordinator to complete required paperwork including a background investigation release form.

Your local Volunteer Coordinator will be able to discuss any additional questions and concerns you may have, as well as register you for the three required training courses. Two courses- Introduction to The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services & ServSafe Starters- are in classroom style settings, while the third- Safe From Harm- can be completed online from home.  Courses are offered locally each quarter and can be taken in any order. To see a list of upcoming local courses and dates click here. EDS Training is free of charge. Space is limited for all training courses. Participants must register at least 3 business days in advance.

Once the required training is completed volunteers will have the opportunity to serve on a response team and as a volunteer during local preparedness drills. Our EDS Volunteers also meet twice each year to fellowship, and learn about upcoming training and service opportunities.

Typical volunteer deployments for local emergencies and disasters range from a few hours to a couple of days, while volunteers who are deployed outside of the local area asked to serve for up to 14 days (including travel). When requests to serve are received, volunteers may only have a short amount of time to prepare for local disaster service, and possibly only 24- 72 hours to prepare for deployment outside of the area. Volunteers always have the option to turn down a deployment when called to serve.
