Social Service Assistance
The Salvation Army of Augusta provides basic social services for walk-ins at the First Stop Center located at 1765 Broad Street. Services provided include food, clothing and miscellaneous assistance Monday through Friday from 9am-12pm and 1-4pm. Assistance for utilities and rent are provided at The Center of Hope office located at 1384 Greene Street, but is by appointment only (see below.)
Rent and Utility Assistance
Rent and utility assistance is available for residents of Richmond, Burke, Columbia and Glascock Counties through the Project SHARE program. The renter utility bill must be past due and the household must be facing a specific challenge or crisis that makes them unable to pay the bill. Natural gas assistance is offered through a special program that has additional income qualifications. For more information about application requirements or to see when the next screening date will be, contact The Center of Hope at 706.826.7933. Pre-screenings applicants are conducted Mondays from 9am-11am and 1pm-3pm by calling 706.434.3180. Bills must be in the clients name and a crisis situation must exist. Appointments will be made after pre-screening for qualifying applicants.
Emergency Grocery and Clothing Assistance
Small food bags are available for people who do not receive food stamps and will be referred to food pantries in their neighborhood for additional food assistance. Clothing vouchers can be given to The Salvation Army Family Stores for people in need of clothing. All applicants should provide a picture ID, social security card, proof of income and expenses and a description of the crisis that caused the need. Applicants must wait at least 90 days after their last visit, unless there is an emergency (fire, lost job, etc.). For more information, call 706.922.8330.
Christmas Gift and Toy Assistance
Christmas gift and toy assistance is available to families with children up to 12 years old. The Salvation Army of Augusta participates in the Augusta Christmas Clearinghouse to insure families receive help from only one agency. Application dates for Christmas assistance dates vary each year, please call 706.922.8330 for specific dates. Christmas assistance applications require a photo ID for all adults in the household, birth certificates for all children in the household, social security cards for all household members, proof of income (including food stamps) and expenses, proof of current address and proof of child custody. Senior citizens and disabled individuals interested in Christmas food-boxes should call 706.922.8330.
Furniture assistance is available only to fire or disaster victims with a referral from the Red Cross and other required documentation. For information and to schedule an appointment for this service please contact the First Stop Center at 706.922.8330.
Other assistance is periodically available depending on the season and supplies available. Items available may include fans, school supplies, children’s books, toiletries or diapers and children’s pajamas.
